Yahoo News Review
by on December 17, 2010
On the day we reviewed this app, Yahoo announced job cuts of up to four per cent of its workforce. That may seem irrelevant but, Flickr aside, Yahoo is struggling big time. It’s way behind Microsoft (although it has a tie-up with them of course) and then there’s Google, a company that looks like it has been around for bundles more time than Yahoo.
This app is typical of the company’s attitude to apps – the official Flickr app aside. This is simply a link to Yahoo News for mobile which displays in an unbordered browser-style format. The problem with this is that it offers absolutely nothing above an experience that you could find just by browsing.
There are ‘Top Stories’ and ‘All news’ tabs – the latter providing sectionalised news – UK/Business/Sport for example. It’s all very basic stuff and, while the in-article navigation is nice, there’s a lot lacking here – Most of the stories are from news agencies and also carry no pictures – though those from ITN do. More work needed here – but will Yahoo have the resources or wherewithal to do it anyway?
