A trip to your local library can uncover all sorts of surprising facts about the landscape and how the actions of its inhabitants have carved up the terrain over the years. Map archives, then, are useful; but wouldn’t they be more so if you could access them on your iPhone? AA Time Machine allows you to do just that.
Open it to register with Cassini Historical maps and four map credits are deposited in your account to start you off. Browse and zoom the UK map for an area to explore or search by town name, post code or GPS location. Then move the slider to time travel, from 1816 to the modern day. Once you’ve homed in on a location, tap the Buy tag and you’ll be treated to a detailed street-level map tile from days of yore. Ten credits are just £2.99, making this a great, inexpensive historians’ tool.
