Huge file sharing and video conversions on the go
Anyone who’s tried to ready up their iPhone for a long journey with films and TV episodes knows the hell of downloading an ad-ridden piece of third party conversion software, and the hours spent rewriting them into a format the iPhone won’t turn its nose up at.
But provided you have a WiFi connection, Air Video does away with that problem in one swoop. Download the server software from the Air Video website and – provided you’ve got access to a WiFi network – every video file on your computer can be streamed to your iPhone, even if its in a non-Apple format. Magic.
The conversion takes place all on the computer, so the app only relays the finished video, meaning that your phone will even stream large 720p video files (only at iPhone resolution, of course). There is a slight delay when streaming the higher quality videos, with DVD ripped TV episodes about 40 minutes in length loading up in seven or eight seconds, and 720p following in 11 or 12. However, compared to the length of time taken to convert popular online video formats like .avi and .mkv, a ten or twelve second wait feels like a sprint. And if the video on your computer is already in Apple format, playback is darn near instantaneous.
We may never know why Jobs and Co. take the stance they do on things like Flash and proprietary video formats, but for just £1.79, you can save yourself almost any need to buy an iPhone with more storage than the base model. Bargain doesn’t begin to cover it.
