A superb shmup that really makes full use of the iPhone’s touchscreen
by on April 20, 2010
One problem with iPhone gaming is the fact that many of the games on the platform have not been designed specifically to make use of the device’s smaller screen and touchscreen control. There are too many well-known console titles ported to iPhone that simply do not work and only serve to disappoint gamers. Thankfully, Jagex’s awesome new shmup StarCannon is not one of them.
Jagex is perhaps best known for developing the massively popular MMO Runescape, so this is something of a departure for the studio. A bit of fun on the side, if you will. And Jagex can afford to fund its own side projects such as iPhone game development, seeing as it has netted a cool £38 million in the past 12 months from Runescape alone!
StarCannon is an unashamedly retro 2D vertical shoot-’em-up (shmup) which is essentially another slightly different take on the genre that hardcore gamers cannot get enough of. If you liked Xevious or Treasure’s dastardly-hard cult classic Ikaruga, then you will like this.
You move your ship with your finger on the iPhone’s touchscreen, which works surprisingly well. As you progress through waves and waves of alien invaders flying down the screen you pick up weapons and power-ups and, essentially, try to beat your last highest score.
It doesn’t break the mould and nor does it make any attempt to. But what it does, it does with class. If you are a shmup fan, then this is certainly 59p very well spent!
