Sonic the Hedgehog 2
One of Sega’s greatest creations from the golden years of the 1990s is lovingly recreated for Apple’s mobile internet device

It would be easy to accuse Sega of trying to cash-in with this latest re-release of its classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for iPhone. But the developers have clearly worked incredibly hard to lovingly re-create the original console experience on Apple’s device.
And if this is the first time that you have ever played Sonic 2, then you really are in for a retro-gaming treat. The storyline, as much as there is a story, is pretty straightforward – Sonic and his mate Tails are charged with stopping Dr. Eggman’s diabolical scheme to take over the world. Stop the evil Eggman as he tries to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds and power up the Death Egg.
It is bonkers, obviously. But the gameplay really is second to none. It is immediately up there with the best iPhone games such as Sega’s other classic, Super Monkey Ball and Rockstar’s superb Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.
For those that might not remember, it is also an incredibly fast game. Sonic 2 was the first game in the series to introduce the spin attack; so you have to hold the d-pad down and push the attack button to increase your burst of speed. And for such a fast-flowing experience, the on-screen touch controls really do work remarkably well.
