John Carmack develops a game for the iPhone, hardcore gamers worldwide gasp with joy
by on December 10, 2010
id Software’s John Carmack is the hardcore gamers and games developer’s developer of choice. The man that made Doom has now created a game called Rage for the iPhone, a superb shoot-em-up featuring his clever ‘megatexture’ technology.
Rage also comes in a HD version for iPhone 4 owners, which turns out to be one of the greatest-looking mobile games we’ve ever seen. In fact, scratch that. Rage HD IS the best-looking mobile game we’ve yet seen. But this doesn’t mean that the ‘standard def’ version for iPhone 3G and 3GS owners is in any way sub-standard.
The hardcore PC gaming faithful await the release of Carmack’s Rage FPS for the PC, with this iPhone game perhaps the best way of spending time until that (no doubt belter of a game) arrives. For cynics that claim that iOS devices cannot ‘do’ first person shooter type games, simply put an iPhone 4 running Rage HD in their hands and watch their disbelief as their jaw hits the floor and they realise what can be done by clever, well thought-out use of the iPhones accelerometer and gyroscope.
To be fair, this is a shooter on rails, which gives the player the option of focusing on what is most fun – shooting mutants’ faces off! It’s id Software. It’s the best game on iPhone yet. Buy it.
