Behold, our hero: he might look like just another cute auto-runner, compelled to sprint through another sadistic obstacle course, but this one has achieved the next stage of genre evolution.
Tapping the screen performs a context-dependent action, whether that’s pulling an adjacent lever or climbing a ladder. Holding down can extend a jump over a chasm, perform a rebound from a wall or wind a gear to raise a platform. Commendably clever design has extracted a surprising degree of choice and complexity from that minimal binary input.
You can skip through levels at will, but collecting all three stars and unlocking bonus items for a perfect score is where the real fun and challenge arises. Frustration with certain elements can set in – springboards, ugh – and the final chapter errs towards unforgiving death-traps. And yet, squished and impaled countless times, we couldn’t resist the pull of one more attempt. If that doesn’t tell you plenty…
