Harmless fruity fun comes to iPhone

Fruit Ninja Review

by on January 5, 2011

The age-old feud between the ninja and the mixed fruit has spread to iPhone. The aim of Fruit Ninja, as you might expect, is simple: use your finger in quick strokes on the touchscreen to guide your ninja blade and carve up a never-ending barrage of colourful fruit being launched from the bottom of the screen.

Depending on the game mode (there are three to select from, each with slightly different rules but ultimately about chopping as much fruit as possible) you lose points for letting fruit drop back off the bottom of the screen uncarved, or for accidentally slicing one of the hissing bombs that occaisionally pop up as an obstacle.

The art style is charmingly cartoony – very Kung Fu Panda – and while the game’s premise may not sound like a formula for lasting appeal, the sounds of the fruit splashing and splatting around, the combo bonuses achieved by slicing multiple fruits with one slash, and a string of silly unlockables (our favourite is the “Disco Blade” – a sword which changes colour with each swipe, unlocked by slicing 40 bananas) make it very compelling and easy to keep coming back to, especially if you find overly complex, physics-based App Store games tedious.

That’s not to say there’s no challenge; as the fruit comes more and more frequently you’ll have to hold back from mad slashing and wait for the perfect moment to make a stab at a combo for bonus points, which is also a good way to lose everything if your swipe misses. Silly, fruity fun.

Absurdly challenging, sometimes brutal, but frequently brilliant (especially on the iPad); just be aware of what you’re letting yourself in for. (Sob.)
