Ants – whose entire combat strategy consists of “bite and die” – aren’t exactly tactical masterminds, and Anthill does little to disprove that. However, what the game lacks in brain-scrambling strategy, it makes up for with an elegantly ingenious control scheme. Commanding your pint-sized army is as simple as drawing lines for different unit types to patrol. Soldiers guard the anthill, workers collect food, spitters deal ranged damage, and so on.
It’s pretty simple from a strategic standpoint, but the campaign is nicely varied, and survival mode is a stern test for even the most battle-hardened of bug-squashers. Really, the game only catches on fire under scrutiny’s magnifying glass when it comes to patrol path deletion, which occasionally lacks responsiveness. It’s frustrating, but hardly a deal-breaker in an otherwise great game.
