A brilliant app that beats the Spotify equivalent at the same price and happens to be a great tool for discovering new music

Napster Review

by on September 21, 2011

Napster’s new iPhone/iPod app is a clear statement that the Rhapsody-powered company is not only here to stay but also plans to offer a few things that Spotify can’t.

For £10 per month you’ll get the full-package which gives you unlimited streaming and access to the mobile app as well as the ability to use Napster via a Sonos multi-room system. Luckily that £10 gives you a lot. The iPhone app is superbly laid out blending an online library, music player and deeply-integrated music discovery system all-in-one. Songs can be played, added to playlists and downloaded from the now playing screen just by holding down on the artwork.

Want something similar? Head to the album page and Napster gives you an impressively well chosen list of alternative artists that offer a similar sound. It’s hard not to be impressed when looking at the likes of both Spotify’s and Pure’s music apps. Genre’s are also well catered for with each offering some discovery options including Key Artists, Key Albums and New This Week as well as a whole range of subgenres to get lost in.

Sound quality is 192kps, a huge leap from the 64kps it used to offer and we’d argue it’s more than enough for the average music listener.

It may not have had the same marketing buzz that Spotify had but Napster’s iPhone app is as good if not better by being not only a seriously powerful music discovery tool but also a genuine alternative to owning music.
