World's biggest movie database lands on the iPhone
IMDb Review
by on April 7, 2011
Those familiar with the regular IMDB site will get quickly acclimatised to the iPhone app version. Like the website, the app is one part film newsfeed and one part treasure trove movie database, with everything from cast, crew and release dates to continuity errors and obscure trivia to satisfy the hardcore film geeks.
Our only criticism is that the app does feel a bit cramped – it packs a lot of information onto the comparatively small homescreen, and the result is a page with one trailer, one news story, and other options like like showtimes and a list of movies you’ve watched hidden off the bottom of the screen. This means a lot of scrolling around through content you might not be interested in, where a tab system at the top or bottom of the app would make things much cleaner. It’s by no means a dealbreaker, but right now you can’t help but be conscious that the app is really just a squashed up version of IMDB.com. It’s certainly not as smooth to use at its big brother on the iPad.
That said, all our favourite features from the site are present and correct, and if you’re stuck for something to watch of an evening, there’s no better app to research viable options. Not only is there an entry for practically every film ever made, but the massive IMDB community have rated them all on scales of one to ten. Hundreds of thousands of people voting on a single film gives you pinpoint accurate aggregate scores (The Dark Knight scores 8.8/10, while Batman Begins only a paltry 8.3, for example) and the top-scoring 50 films in each genre can be browsed in their own lists. So, whatever you’re after, IMDB’s got you covered.
