4Dirt cheap VoIP calling across the world
Skype Review
by on March 10, 2011
Just as you’d expect, calls using VoIP from the iPhone Skype app are borderline-insultingly cheap compared to making a standard call, especially if you call abroad often. Assuming the person you’re dialling is also using a Skype account, then the whole conversation is completely free, but even when ringing a mobile overseas (the app integrates with your iPhone phonebook) the cost with Skype is pittance in comparison to the terrifying charges you’d ring up otherwise.
Skype also offers monthly packages to make calling abroad even more appealing – £4.59 per month for unlimited landline and mobile calls to the US, for example. On all the numbers we tried, the call quality was similar to a regular call, if sometimes with a little (but not disastrous) delay between speaking and and being heard.
If you already have a Skype account, setting up the app is no more complicated than logging in using your regular account details. Setting up an account and using the service for Skype-to-Skype calls is free, although calling mobiles and landlines requires a credit card to upload cash to your account.
Also included in the app is the Skype messenger service, which lets you send instant text messages to other Skype users. This works fine, but the iPhone’s touchscreen keyboard wasn’t made for lengthy text conversations, however magical and revolutionary Apple claim it to be.
Even if you’re not calling darkest Africa on a regular basis, Skype will knock big money off the texting and calling columns of your phone bill, even if you don’t give it your credit card details.

The interface feels a bit out of place on iOS, but it’s a fun app, and produces interesting results.

Absurdly challenging, sometimes brutal, but frequently brilliant (especially on the iPad); just be aware of what you’re letting yourself in for. (Sob.)
