Even with every iPhone 4S, newer iPod touch and iPad 2 shipping with front-facing cameras, FaceTime remains of limited use if your contacts aren’t using a Mac or another iOS device – so if a friend is on a Windows PC or other smartphone you’re out of luck, unless you’ve downloaded an app like Skype.
This recent iPad release (a separate download from the iPhone version) offers far more connectivity – even to Skype for TV users – as well as integration with Skype’s paid-for services. Even the original iPad can receive video calls from other devices, though to send video you’ll obviously need an iPad 2.
Besides the superb device support, Skype also copes far better with low-bandwidth connections than FaceTime. Despite being somewhat sluggish on our iPad 2, it’s great for cross-platform chats.
