4Great looks, great level design and spectacular crashes lift this bike game above the norm

Motocross and trials games are not exactly a rarity on iOS, but if you have any interest in bikes and, more importantly, falling off them in spectacular style, Xtreme Wheels is particularly worthy of your attention.
There are five environments containing four courses each, and while this doesn’t sound an awful lot, the levels are superbly designed, providing a graded challenge from effortless right up to seemingly impossible.
The idea of each level is to reach the end point as quickly as possible without crashing too much. You do this using the accelerator and brake and, crucially, a slider that allows you to move the rider back and forth to alter the bike’s balance. Using these controls you can perform a mindboggling array of manoeuvres, allowing you to wheelie, scale large obstacles, ride loops, bunny hop gaps… pretty much anything.
While it’s best to complete the courses cleanly, crashing is also great fun. The levels are littered with hazardous obstacles, including exploding barrels. Get your approach wrong and you’ll have a good giggle watching your rider’s head get stuck in a girder, body parts flailing, or getting flung across the screen by a large explosion.
Our only criticisms are that it’s maybe a little too hard in the final stages and there’s only one play mode. Otherwise this is massively enjoyable.

The iOS equivalent of a plain cheese sandwich: does the job, but it won't linger in the memory afterwards.

The interface feels a bit out of place on iOS, but it’s a fun app, and produces interesting results.
Puzzlejuice
Absurdly challenging, sometimes brutal, but frequently brilliant (especially on the iPad); just be aware of what you’re letting yourself in for. (Sob.)
