5Children can play as they learn in this wildly imaginative and flawlessly immersive learning experience
Bobo Explores Light Review
by on February 17, 2012
Although its target audience is seven- to eight-year-olds, this app will appeal to many younger and older children, too. Thanks to the iPad, books no longer need to be passive repositories of knowledge: they can entice you with amazingly fluid animation.
Bobo’s purpose is to teach children all about light, where it comes from and how you can manipulate it. It thoroughly covers all aspects of this subject through 17 chapters, which you can follow in sequence (after a brief tutorial), or jump to your favourite using the table of contents.
Bobo is a charming robot that guides you through each page. Almost everything you see can be interacted with and you can pull down special sections should you wish to learn more about a particular subject.
The information is clear and concise, and there are even practical exercises built in thanks to a few experimental sections (like learning about reflection thanks to mirrors and phosphorescence with the help of fridge magnets).

Ragdoll Blaster 3
The iOS equivalent of a plain cheese sandwich: does the job, but it won't linger in the memory afterwards.

Puckerz
One for those with a careless bent, and perfect for when you want to play a game but not do any thinking.
iPad
Pulse: Volume One
Stylish, absorbing and challenging, but needs Game Center support and an injection of longevity and jolly.

Procreate
Some hugely impressive tools and an interface ideal for artists make this a great painting app.

Print n share
Difficult to set up, but once you’ve got it working, it offers a great range of print options.
iPad
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within HD
Control issues aside, Warrior Within really is a magnificent sequel.

The interface feels a bit out of place on iOS, but it’s a fun app, and produces interesting results.
Puzzlejuice
Absurdly challenging, sometimes brutal, but frequently brilliant (especially on the iPad); just be aware of what you’re letting yourself in for. (Sob.)
