It's a slick app that promises a decent service once the Big Brother torment is over for another year
Channel 5 has always been given a bit of a rough ride by us Brits. Despite giving us such quality shows as Family Affairs, Live from Studio Five! and The Terry and Gabby Show, Channel 5’s audience share is lower now than it was in 1999, when it was low.
The latest attempt to launch C5 into the spotlight is the acquisition of social programming goliath Big Brother, and coinciding with this launch comes the new Demand 5 iOS app. Despite the branding, this is not a full-blown Demand 5 service; it’s Big Brother only. You wouldn’t know that from the name, but the icon is the Big Brother logo.
It’s likely that when BB ends (oh sweet mercy), another app with more content will replace this one. For the time being, though, it’s not a bad app. All videos are hidden behind pre-roll adverts, which is to be expected, and the length of these ranges from 15 to 45 seconds. Video quality is adequate without being spectacular, there are no syncing issues and load times are minimal.
You get permanent access to every episode of BB and sister show Big Brother’s Bit on the Side, until the show ends. So for BB die-hards, this is a must-have app. Everyone else may want to wait until the full Demand 5 app appears later in the year.
