YouTube is quickly becoming essential on smartphones, so it’s weird that there’s still no official application for it on BlackBerrys.

However, that’s where apps like Player for YouTube come in – making it easy to use the online video service without the need for an official portal.

It’s a little basic, with a list-based view not going down far enough in our opinion. If you want to see the features, most viewed or top rated applications, you’re given the bog standard options that have been around for donkey’s years, and not many of them at that.

You can’t reset the parameters either, so once you’ve watched ‘Charlie bit my finger’ and the rest of the similar applications you’re pretty much done with that category.

It’s cool that the video quality doesn’t degrade over 3G signal compared to Wi-Fi, although we did notice some stuttering when out and about, even on low resolution video.

You can sign in to access your favourites, which makes a big difference, although using the playlist function isn’t as easy, so you can’t really substitute this application for your standalone music player.

However, if you want a potted down YouTube player for your BlackBerry, this isn’t too bad – we just think an official version could do a lot better.
