Not perfect but one of the best paper apps for tablets

The Times Review

by on February 28, 2012

The Times newspaper took some stick when it announced it was going behind a paywall but this putting up the fence actually meant the company opened up to digital and also developed an app for both Android and iOS.

The Times app is by no means perfect but after playing with it for some weeks now on a Samsung Galaxy 10.1, we can forgive its foibles as, for the money, you get a helluvah lot.

Yes, we said money – the app is free, but you need to pay a subscription charge which is currently £3 a week. This is set to go to £4 soon, however. This charge also allows access to the website and it means you get every Times newspaper out – even the weekend editions, though the Sunday edition has actually been given its own app.

Once you sign up to the deal – the first month is free – you can then begin downloading the paper to your tablet. This is where things get interesting. The app for us on most occasions force closes when we load it up. So, it essentially takes two attempts each time to load the app up. Once done, it takes seconds to download the paper in digital form – just click download on the sections you want and you are away.

Load the paper up and you will find that you can only read it in landscape mode. We didn’t mind this but for others it will annoy – especially considering most people read papers in portrait format.

As it is in landscape, it is also not full screen. Again, this wasn’t really a problem as it left room for the navigation buttons of the app.

There’s no way to zoom into the copy of the paper, so those with poor eyesight will want to avoid.

Navigation of the app is decent though. Click on the articles on the front page and you are transported to that article in the paper and so forth.

The Times isn’t stupidly interactive, but it does offer some video and lots of swipeable areas. There’s also the bonus of seeing the paper’s brilliant photography in full screen.

A bit broken but when it works it’s an app you will be using daily.
