Read all about it, all the news from New York and beyond
by on June 20, 2010
In a time when British newspapers seem to be pushing themselves behind pay-wall after pay-wall – we are looking at you Times Online – it is refreshing to come across an Android app which is not only free but has some great functionality.
The New York Times is one of the world’s oldest and well-established papers and its Android bedfellow is designed to emulate this.
Load it up and news is shown with a thumbnail image.
Click on the headline that interests you and you’ll be transported straight to the article.
Everything works on the app and it works fast. Articles are formatted so there is an image at the top, then the full copy running underneath.
There’s not too many breaks in the writing but it is at a healthy font size. If you are not happy with the size of the text, click the menu button and you can make it bigger.
Here you also have the option to share what you are reading with others.
The front page consists of nine main headline articles but there is a drop down to choose your favourite subject – World, US, Technology, whatever floats your boat.
There were some niggles. We couldn’t get the video to work and the app did crash a number of times in our tests. But there is so much good content on show here, you can forgive these minor foibles.
