The Android operating system is one that not only divides the general public but also divides its own fans. On the one side you have the hardcore, which like nothing more than to play with a vanilla version of Android. On the other, you have those who can only use Android if a big phone company has added a decent skin.

For our money, HTC is the only company we would let skin and Android phone – the less said about MotoBlur, the better – but there’s also a number of apps on the market which allow you to modify all Android phones, even ones that are skinned.

For our money, Go Launcher is the best of the lo as it is one app that seems to have its own ecosystem. For a start, it isn’t really just one app – download Go Luncher and that is just the start.

If you have modified your phone already, then Go Launcher will allow you to keep the layout but also give you a whole host of new options. Most of these come in the form of widgets – unlike the stock ones found on your handset these have been created to enhance the Go Launcher experience. There’s a load of free ones you can choose, including social networking apps for Facebook and Twitter but there are also ones that allow you look at calendars, access your contacts quicker and a number of power management services that make sure you get the most out of your phone’s battery.

For a free application you get an awful lot with Go Launcher but it is the little things that make the app worthwhile – just adding a simple tick box so you can add multiple apps to a screen on your phone shows the ingenuity of the app.

Go Launcher is an app that’s worth a download, especially if you are bored with how your current phone operates.
