Money-grabbing shoot-'em-up that's far too much fun for free

We will get the elephant out of the room first: Aussaulter is an awful name and one which only really works if you say while doing a bad Schwarzenegger impression. But if you can look beyond the turgid title, what you have is a cracking platformer that’s high on bullets, but lacking somewhat in brains.
The premise for Assaulter is simple – you play a soldier armed to the teeth with weaponry whose mission is to kill everything in sight, pick up the money they leave on the floor and swap this for even more bad ass weaponry. And that is what you do before you actually even know you are doing it. This is because the controls for this side-scroller are a little odd. Shooting is pretty much automatic – once you lock eyes on an enemy, your gun goes off automatically spraying the screen with bullets. As most men know, this situation is not ideal but what it does bring to the game is frenzied gameplay.
To move you just swipe the screen left or right. A long swipe makes your skid and sometimes somersault and rapid tapping of the screen increases the speed you fire your bullets.
We found ourselves just swiping and tapping the screen as much as possible to do away with the barrage of baddies and this seemed to do the trick, so this is not a game for those who like precision.
If old-school gaming, complete with end bosses is your thing, then Assaulter will not disappoint. Just don’t expect variation – this is a bullet frenzy and no more.
