Improved app means that watching YouTube on Android no longer frustrates
YouTube 2.1 Review

Let’s face it: YouTube isn’t the same now that the copyright vultures regularly circle the site, swoop in and take everything worth watching.
But the fact that the YouTube of today is a mere rotting carcass of its former self, filled with happy slapping videos, Japanese techno and Perez bloody Hilton shouldn’t mean it gets a shonky Android treatment.
If you are going to watch a YouTube clip on your phone, then it may as well be in style – something the new-and-improved YouTube app has in spades.
Built from the ground up YouTube version 2.1 is a joy to use. Resembling the desktop version of the site, the app does well to mask the limitations of watching and searching for video on a small screen by making the UI intuitive.
Click on a video (we chose Perez Hilton happy slapping a Japanese DJ) and underneath you get a description of the video and tabs for related videos and comments. You can flick left and right to get to these categories.
When you want to watch a clip, simply rotate your handset and it will automatically go to full screen. A double click and you are back to the preview screen.
You can choose the categories of the videos on offer and this will bring you to another screen that you can again control by a finger flick.
The ease of use of the new app has to be applauded and it seems that Google will keep this version of the app regularly upgraded. This is because it is now available straight from Android Market and not just bundled with handsets.
Unfortunately – and ironically – YouTube 2.1 only works on Android 2.2 at the moment, but if you are up to date with your OS, then snap up YouTube for Android now.
