Crackle is that odd beast of an app – one which offers a lot but is ultimately disappointing. The app offer free movie and TV content. No, not in the way Google offers it when you search for dubious torrents but in an official capacity. All you have to do is watch a little advert at the beginning and then you have your choice of content.

The app is actually pretty slick but where it suffers is in the actual content. What’s on offer here is pretty much what gets shown on low-rent satellite channels in the middle of the night.

There’s movies like Cheech And Chong’s Nice Dreams, Cruel Intentions 2 and Street Fighter available at the touch of a button. But they aren’t really enough to draw you in, unless you have a few beers and a kebab down you.

There’s also a choice of TV shows but again these are quite obscure. Highlights include The Jackie Chan Adventures, The Tick and Samurai X. Again, this isn’t the sort of content that you would actively seek out.

The quality of the feeds differ but on the whole the streams are pretty good – though we would recommend using a tablet to view the long form stuff.

It’s hard to criticise an app which does offer a bounty of free content but Crackle is just a little meh. If it does manage to bring in better content (one movie we would definitely recommend on Crackle is Kung Fu Hustle) then the app would go up a lot in our estimation.
